Subject: [*] Carotto 1.0.4 ( game )
Carotto 1.0.4 Luc De Bois, (c) 1993 Tricky Soft
Carotto is a fully interactive board game for up to 5 human and/or mac pla-
yers. It simulates a car race : you draw the circuit with the mouse then race
on it.
You can select the number of players and their skill anytime you want during
the race, just clicking on the appropriate buttons. You want to play with a
friend ? Select 2 cars then start the game. Your friend ( a beginner ) is far
away behind you ? Let him play once again, or select one of the three mac pla-
yers skills to automatically play for him. Your friend gives up ? Race against
four mac players ( two beginners, one medium and one expert, that's a good
deal ! ). You want to play alone to improve your skill and get the best race
in
one circuit lap ? Well... That's up to you ! Finally, the circuit is too easy
for you ? Draw another one ( or play with an old one that has been saved pre-
viously ) which figures a few more sharp turns and chicanes.
The race principle is simple : a speed vector is associated with your car.
At
each race step you choose between ( in the most favourable case ) 4 possibili-
ties to increase or decrease your speed vector and your car moves to the new
position you've chosen : that's all ! You will accelerate in straight lines
but
be wise to anticipate road bends : whether you slow down in time or not,
you'll
take the race lead or crash into the circuit frame... You also need to antici-
pate your adversaries' movements in order to avoid crashing into them but
also,
so as to obstruct their way and make them follow the wrong direction... That's
how things go in reality !
Carotto should work on every mac with system 7.0 or greater and a 256-colour
screen.
Carotto is a whatever-you-want-ware ( see Credits inside ) !
Enjoy !

Subject: [*] e-disk Demo - replacement
Dears Mac Informers,
Here is a working version of the e-disk 1.2 demo. The last one was apparently
corrupted. Please delete the last file I sent (e-disk 1.2) from the "disk and
file directory" - or comp - and replace it with this compact. I have included
a
brief read-me file which explains how to get it to work
(Just click OK three times on the start-up screen instead of entering a serial
number. After three failed attempts at entering the serial number, it will
work
as the demo version)
This demo will expand your drive 1.5 times instead of the 2,3, or 4 times
available in the fully registered version. By using it's built in registration
option (register by phone) you can get an authorization number too use it
immediately. You will still need to pay for the full version, but you don't
have
to wait for them to ship it to you.
Try it out on a drive, you will need to back-up and restore all of your data,
but you can easily remove e-disk from your drive if you decide it is not what
you need.

Hello folks,
This is a tiny program I wrote a few month ago to solve the eternal
problem of quotient approximations. You just enter the rationnal
number (eg: 0.707) and it gives you a set of propositions depending
upon the accuracy required (eg:707/1000 or VC2/2 or (87609*e)/336840).
It includes 2 help buttons (one in French, the other in English)
that may give you further details, but it's really simple to use.
Enjoy.

This is Network Time, version 2.0. Please replace any earlier versions
of Network Time you may have with this.
Network Time is a control panel program that sets the clock on your
Macintosh computer to the correct time of day. To do this, Network Time
contacts a time server using the Apple MacTCPnetwork software to get
the correct time of day. Network Time automatically adjusts your clock
taking into consideration the time zone and the daylight savings time
rules that you configure using the Network Time control panel.
Network Time requires at least a Macintosh Plus computer running system
software version 6.0.5 or later (including System 7) and requires
MacTCP version 1.1 or later. Network Time has full Balloon Help
support. Foreign language versions of Network Time are available
separately; the versions that are now either avaiable or in progress
are Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Japanese, Russian, Spanish, and
Swedish.
This package contains a QuickStart manual with basic instructions in
TeachText format and the full Network Time manual is provided in
MacWrite Pro format. The manual is also available in PostScript format
in a separate archive, and a printed copy of the manual can be obtained
>From the author.

2. Copy the folder to any non-start-up drive and launch the Installer.
If you only have one drive, copy the contents of the folder to a floppy and

Subject: [*] One last update to Simpsons Icons file
September 21, 1993
To the Sumex folks,
It is necessary to write to you one last time, because I have one last
update on my Simpsons Icons file. Sorry about all the trouble; this has
been my first "upload" and I guess it took 3 tries to get it right.
Anyway, the problem is that although my icons are free to distribute, one
person said he had modified the icons by putting them in a resource file.
The problem is that some of my work will be lost (some of the icon
resources will be gone). I didn't want them distributed in this manner, and
realized that I'd better send ya'll an updated file, which had a statement
in my "read me" about NOT modifying the original file upon further
distribution.
So, please put this SimpsonIcons.sea file in place of the one that's there,
in the info-mac/gui/grf directory. Thanks for your patience. I can't see
any other reason that I'd have to make another; this is it--finito.
Once again, thanks loads for your patience and cooperation with this
first-timer. :-)

Subject: [*] PopChar 2.6.2
This is PopChar version 2.6.2. It corrects two bugs that were introduced
in version 2.6.1. The iconic menu mode now works as announced, and the
startup icon can be turned off again.
Sorry for the inconvenience if you already downloaded 2.6.1.
[Moderators: please remove version 2.6.1 from the archives.]
For your information, here is what was new in version 2.6.1:
- A complete rewrite of essential parts was taken to make PopChar
compatible with Microsoft Works 3.0.
- The incompatibility with MacWrite Pro was resolved.
- PopChar can now be invoked from an icon menu next to the help menu
(System 7 only).
- Up to 255 characters can now be inserted in the "More" mode.
- The hiliting of the menus was removed.
- The font size is now chosen such that the character chart always fits
on the main monitor.
- The frame around the "P" icon is not drawn on secondary monitors any
more.
- The PopChar settings are now stored in a preferences file rather than
ion a resource in the control panel itself.
- The PopChar icon was made more "System-7-ish".
- The "ATR patch" was removed. It isn't necessary any more.
- The documentation was converted to TeachText format.
For those who do not know what PopChar is for:
PopChar is a control panel that simplifies "typing" of unusual characters.
Click the PopChar icon in the menu bar, select the character you want,
and PopChar automatically inserts it in the current document as if you had
typed the proper key combination on the keyboard.
PopChar is FREE. TeachText documentation included.

Tiny Saver is a very small screen saver. It does just what a
screen saver is supposed to do and not much else. It is an
application so no conflicts but it only uses about 12k of RAM
18 of disk space. This version is a 'background only appliation'
so it only uses 12k of RAM when it is in not actually saving the
screen. Being a FBA it will not show up in the application
menu and won't always end up in your face when you quit other
applications. It is a nifty (IMHO) blend of the features of
a system extension with the reliability of an application.
I have removed all the features I added in 3.0 for a variety of
reasons. Some of them didn't work on older machines and I don't
have time at the moment to fix them. Also I thought I might be
abandoning my original concept. I will use those features in a
seperate application in the future. If you have 3.0 and it works
fine on your machine feel free to use it, it just didn't work on
some machines.

you call it something like "hyper-notebook-v1b1" or "hypernotebook-v1.0b1"

++++++++++++++++ HyperNotebook Abstract ++++++++++++++++
This is the second public release of HyperNotebook and Reference Stack.
They are hypermedia versions of a spiral notebook and a box of
bibliographic notecards, respectively. They work together, or separately,
and provide not only standard text manipulation and selectable key-field
card sorting, but also button-driven PICT and QuickTime viewing, embedded
pop-up notes, and much more.
This is public domain software. It uses several of Frederic Rinaldi's
wonderful XCMD's and XFCN's. (Thank you Mr. Rinaldi.) Per Mr. Rinaldi's
licensing requirements, this software is not licensed for commercial
distribution, but it may be freely distributed in the public domain on a
not-for-profit basis.

After much deliberation, I've decided to bite on the MacWareHouse offer for
the $99 14.4k data modem (no fax support). I've talked to both TCI and
MacWareHouse about the modem and here's the skinny:
TCI LineLink 14,400 bps data only modem bundled with MacKnowledge and
AccuWeather. It uses v.32bis and MNP5. It DOES support v.42bis to get up to
57.6k thruput (in theory), according to MacWareHouse.
MWH does not have the 30 day MBG on this product, but says there is a 90-day
warranty (parts/labor). TCI on the other hand says it is actually 1-year
(p/l).
TCI is a subsidiary of Prometheus (and so is DataDesk), if that makes any
difference.
I'll be receiving the modem tomorrow afternoon, so after a week or so, I'll
review the modem for any others that might be interested.

OFFICE MEMO Anyone know what .pbm format is? (A) Date:9/21/93
.pbm stands for Point Bit Mapped. On a Unix system, check the man pages for
pbm. There are utilities to convert pbm to GIF (pbm2gif), as well as the
pbmplus utilities available at ftp sites. Point bit mapped means that each
pixel is represented by one bit (therefore, B/W images only). .pgm stands for
point grauy mapped, where a pixel is represented by a byte - 256 grayscale.
The format of the pbm file looks like
P4
512 512
[binary data]
Where the first line is the code for pbm, the second line, (ASCII) has the
rows
and columns, and then it is binary data.
I am not aware of any .pbm viewers for the Mac. I usually convert it to GIF
or
TIFF on my Sun and then transfer over.

Subject: AppleTalk file protocol UNIX File Server
John,
The file server that you are using is probably ignoring
the AFPSetForkParams or AFPSetFileParams call that is
used by the Macintosh after it copies a file to set
the timestamp of the file back to its original time.
Also, some Unix systems do not allow normal users to
set the timestamp of a file backwards in time, so
depending on how your fileserver implements these
AFP (AppleTalk Filing Protocol) calls, you may be
stuck. I do know that AFP servers provided by
other companies (e.g. uShare, from IPT, 805-541-3000) have
ways to work around this problem so that timestamps
are preserved (at least from the Macintosh's point
of view), so it is possible to do.

OK, sounds cool, but when I go to update a version of an extension, say
Disinfectant init, from 2.9 to 3.2, how do I get all the aliases on those

Sorry for the late reply. These fonts are probably Type 3 fonts.
Chances are that the solution to your problem is converting them to
Type 1 with Altsys' Fontographer or some font convesion utility.
Make sure you have the Postscript fonts installed. If you open the
System Folder and then the Fonts folder (Sys 7.1 only) and View by
Kind, they will be listed as "PostScript TM Fonts." The ones listed
as "Font Suitcases" are not enough.
BTW- does anyone know the practical limit of fonts one can install
in Sys 7.1's Fonts folder before they should go out and get Suitcase
or one of its competitors? Thanks, Pete Tamas

I have had this problem twice. I sort of just forgot about it after figuring
out
how to get it to go away the first time (see below), but it recently came
back.
I didn't know what caused it the first time, but I seem to recall puttin
a new copy of the Finder (which I had been playing with) influenced the
problem. Recently, I seemed to be unable to turn on VM - the option would
take
in the memory cdev and make the file, but upon reboot the VM file got
deleted.
The memory cdev still said VM was on (after reboot...). Rather than try and
track this down, I decided to reinstall the system from the 7.0.1 floppies (I
am running 7.0.1). This also re-installed the FInder, of course. Upon
reboot,
VM came back, but the Gatekeeper problem reappeared. Recopying the old Finder
back made that go away; wonder if it has to do with relative dates of System
and
Finder files. Allowing the System to attack the Finder and then disallowing
the privilege doesn't help the problem in the long run, btw.-kby

Situation: power failure last Friday. Upstairs, we have PacerShare running
on a Decstation 5000 (Ultrix 4.3), serving a classroom of Ethernet-
connected Centris 650's, plus a lab of LCIII's connected via AppleTalk and a
FastPath V. After the power failure, the Centris 650's can access the server,
but the LCIII's on the other side of the FP cannot see it. BYU Telnet,
however, can make it across the FP (i.e. we can telnet out from the LCIII's
to Internet sites, etc.).
We have reconfigured the FP as best we can recall, but we're new to the
world of Macs on Ethernet and quite likely we're overlooking something. Is
there a Mac/FastPath/Ethernet guru out there who might be able to help?
We're pretty sure it's a zone problem, because PacerShare insists it's on
the "*" zone and that no other zones are visible, even though we have 2
different zones, each of which can see each other, but neither of which can
see the server.

This may not be something you'd do every day, but perhaps this gives
someone an idea for future use. Perhaps you can compress the "original."
Then, when you double click your document, the Mac does not find the
program in the original place, finds the one on the other volume (RAM disk
in this case) and updates the desktop file to reflect the "new" location
of the application. Again, if you create a RAM disk every day, this is
pretty tedious but since it may be usefull information for someone,
I decided to post this idea.-Pete Tamas

The menu commands for the Finder can be found in the first few "fmnu"
resources
in the Finder file. I don't remember which specific number it is, but you'll
know it when you open the resource. There are several "empty" spaces before
each command. The shortcut for the command goes in the third character before
the title: for example, T##Empty Trash (#=non-printing character). (I used
this process in boith Systems 7.0.1 and 7.1.)
The cp SpeedyFinder7 can dynamically add some of these key commands.

Subject: Leaving (non-Mac) computers on
Pholx,
Part of the reason UNIX machines are left on is that they are
multi-user. If you want to use a Mac which is off, you simply turn it on
and wait for it to boot up. UNIX machines can be used remotely, via telnet
or rlogin, and their disks can be accessed from other machines (via *FS,
particularly NFS). It does bad things to your UNIX boxes if (remote) parts
of their filesystems are shut off.
It's also true that UNIX machines are designed to be on most of the
tim, but this isn't that big a difference -- Apples are (all) designed to
take this treatment in situations where they're left on.

I've sent the text of an article about how to maximize your computer's
lifespan by being smart about when you turn it on or off. A lot of
discussion of this topic has been in the digest recently, and this is the
only in depth discussion based on real engineering experience I've seen.
Everyone who owns a Mac should read this, since it gives guidelines on how
you can double your computer's life.
For those who don't have time, the bottom line is that you should turn your
Mac off if you won't be using it for 8 hours or more. This will make your
Mac last longer and reduce energy consumption.

Subject: One place where Windoze beats Mac (Summary 2)
Here is the second summary regarding my suggestion that the Mac could
really use an object oriented navigation system (If you missed the first
summary, please read it before commenting on this - it is in Info-Mac #183
and is called "One place where Windoze beats Mac (Summary)").
By object oriented navigation (hereafter referred to as OON), I mean a system
that lets you from one object to the next instead of one pixel to the next.
The idea is that we don't really care about distinguishing pixels in an
interface, only objects (menus, menu items, buttons, icons, etc). For more
info, read the last summary.
As before, please send replies to me, not Info-Mac. I will post another
summary if warrented. This helps de-clutter the digest, and avoid digest
wars.
First of all, several people misunderstood the summary, and thought that I
said "Windoze is better than MacOS". This was not what I said at all. I only
said that the OON of Windoze (by letting you use keystrokes to jump from one
object to the next) beats the analog input of a mouse once you know your way
round the app/OS/etc.
One very good point was made: the idea of an OON system is entirely seperate
>From the idea of the convenience of being able to keep your hands on the
keyboard. Following are two points that expand opposite sides of this
concept:
1) One of the problems with a mouse is that you have to take your hands off
of the keyboard, and sometimes your eyes off of the screen. This is solved
in the case of Powerbooks, where the mouse is accessible to thumbs WITHOUT
removing your hands from the standard touch-type position, and thus without
removing your eyes from the screen.
One user said that he liked the Powerbook setup so much that he bought a
trackball for is desk mac, and put it directly in front of the space bar
of his keyboard. He says that it works just as well as the Powerbook.
2) The idea of an OON system could easily be applied to an otherwise analog
input device (e.g. a mouse): It is easy to imagine a system that has an
object "mode" for the arrow (pointer) which automatically centers it on the
nearest object. This would certainly solve the problem of "chasing" objects
around the screen, and could make mouse navigation faster than the
keyboard.
(If anyone feels like writing such an application, I highly encourage it -
If you got the idea here, please give me credit, but that's all I ask.)
Someone pointed out that there is a very good reason for the mouse-free
ability
of Windoze: Many PCs don't have mice (historically more true than today). This
is somewhat tangential, but it makes the interesting suggestion that the OON
ability of Windoze may be more of a side-effect than simply good planning.
There is another benefit of keyboard OON: the ability to put events into a
buffer. It is much harder to queue mouse events than keystrokes, so the
keyboard lets you enter a large string of events and let the CPU finish them
as fast as it can, instead of stopping to wait for the user between events.
Another person made the comment that he was not interested in keyboard
navigation. This is fine, but it is not a reason to omit it from an OS.
Everyone has his preferences. If preferences don't conflict, then they should
both be offered (IMO).
Here are some other products that people mentioned that help with this area:
Greg's Buttons
ApplWindows (keystroke application & window switcher)
ProSwitch (keystroke application switcher)
Escapade (dialog navigator)

Subject: Problem with Word Subscribe (Q)
Hello,
I have a problem with publish and subscribe between MS Word and MacDraw Pro. I
am writing technical documentations with Word 5.0 desighning the graphics in
MacDraw Pro 1.5. During a development phase of such a text I use the publish
and subscribe functionality.
This normally works perfectly well. When designing a new graphic, I create a
publisher and subscribe to it in Word, which makes the picture appear in the
text as it was drawn in MacDraw Pro. I then only have to center, left- or
right
align it.
In my texts I so far experienced a special problem with two pictures:
When subscribing these graphics they were inserted into the word text, but the
subscribers window was smaller than the graphic object, so only part of the
picture was visible. By clicking on the frame and enlarging it with the mouse
the problem can be solved. But after each new subscribe operation, or each new
opening of hte text file, the problem occurs again. I already deleted the
entire graphic in MacDraw Pro and recreated it and also recreated the
publisher
(publishing only entire objects). But that doesn't help.
Any ideas?
Thanks for help

Subject: Where are my fonts hiding??
Maybe one of these days I will finally figure out fonts...
The other day, I noticed that when certain fonts were displayed
they looked terrible on the screen. This occurred in MS Word,
Canvas and in some dialog boxes. This occurred in places where I
had never noticed anything wrong before (previously created
documents, etc.). The display looked like very bad bitmap
characters.
I finally had a chance to do some checking and it appears that
one of the major culprits in Geneva 10pt. So off I go looking
through my font suitcase (I am using Carpetbag). In it, I have a
whole collection of Geneva fonts, including Geneva 10.
Ok...I figure that maybe some of the fonts that have been added
lately have caused some resource id conflict and proceed to move
all of the more esoteric stuff off to another suitcase that is
not on Carpetbag's list. No joy, applications still only see
Geneva 9 and 12.
So here are the questions:
- In the font suitcase is a font file that is called simply
Geneva (supposedly containing 9,12,18 pt) and separate files for
Geneva (italic) 9 and Geneva 10, 14, 18, 20, 24 (all separate).
Can some font wizard, clearly explain what the difference between
these files are (is there any?).
- Most importantly, can someone explain why all of the Geneva
(and Monaco) sizes are not available? BTW this problem does not
effect all of my fonts (all of my Times sizes are available).

About a dozen (not to extreme) extensions.
Oh yeah, printing a document with Geneva 10 does not look as bad
as the on screen font but it is definitely worse than it used to
be.
Thanks in advance to all you font wizards out there.

Subject: Where to get ChineseSystem 7.x?
Just read an article in this week's MacWeek (9.20.93) about Apple
opening up shop in Beijing. It also talks about ChineseSystem 7.1S.
Anyone on the net know how to get/where to get/cost of said
ChineseSystem? APDA? ftp.apple.com?
Please reply by email, I'll post to the net if enough people request
to.

Subject: Word ->> Tex Converters
Hi netters,
I posted last week a question on a good text editor to use with OzTeX. Yhe
answer was unanimous: Alpha. I tried it, and I think it's pretty good.
However, I still have a problem: I have most of my work saved in Word 5.1
format. Is there a way to convert it to TeX format? It wouldn't be so nice
to have to reformat all the documents...
Thanks,
Carlo <mc3687@mclink.it>
PS: please, answer to mailbox!
